For a new application for the worldwide service on a mobile turning and balancing machine for turbine rotors during power plant overhaul, company ROLLSTAR did develop a new planetary gearbox with gear shifting at the in-house engineering department. The project for Swiss company KAWE AG in CH-5604 Hendschiken, globally active in the field of engineering and special purpose machinery manufacture, has been realised within shortest delivery time.
One of the technical challenges amongst others has been how to comply with the wide range of the load cases from torque 1'500 Nm at 800 min-1 up to 40'000 Nm at 3 min-1 at the gearbox output.
From applications in earth drilling equipment as well as in mining, company ROLLSTAR has already gained years of experience in the manufacture of planetary gearboxes that can be changed ratio while standstill. This know-how has been implemented successfully into the new product development.
The drive solution has been realised by modifying a standard two stage ROLLSTAR planetary gearbox designed for 45'000 Nm by adding a shifting mechanism. In 1:1 mode, the torque is transmitted directly from the driving motor to the gearbox output. This allows high output speed at low torque and with minimal power dissipation. By applying the gear shift mechanism, the two planetary gear stages can be activated and therefore reached a ratio of 1:28.89 for the load case with high torque at low speed. The new gearbox has been examined thoroughly on the internal test rig after manufacturing.
